Sommer was elected to the Township board in 2016. She served on the Canton Roads Task Force and the Culture Arts and Heritage Commission.

Founding member of the Canton Democratic Club, Sommer served as its first Vice-President, and later, President.
Worked for Obama for America, State Representative Dian Slavens and the US House of Representatives.
She is currently the Executive Director of a non-profit where she has raised over $16 million to support 137 organizations that engage in civic education work.
